Beauty Buys

Last Saturday I dragged a good friend to Sephora. Just quickly, I said. Let me just buy a concealer, I said. This isn’t a huge shopping trip, I said….

I had intended to stay cool, calm, collected on this quick excursion. No dawdling. No chit chat. Just a simple trip to Sephora to buy a single concealer but… what can I say? I’m a girl and I get caught up in all exciting new trends, especially as I’ve started to become paranoid about aging.  Let me tell you, I no longer look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (unless you count my naturally frizzy hair) in the morning.  I need all the help I can get, which is why I went a little crazy and became a major shopaholic.  Here are just a few of the things I bought on my massive shopping trip.

Sephora Ginseng Eye Mask: I don’t know about you but if I don’t get sleep, my eyes look really puffy, which is why this mask is perfect.  I’ve heard about these in the past and have always been a little dubious about how effective they are but I can honestly say after trying it over the weekend… it worked. After using it for twenty minutes, I looked so well-rested. I’m a massive fan.

NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray: Setting spray is a must-have for anyone who wears make-up throughout the day. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without it.  Two simple spritzes after putting on my make-up and I feel like I’m all set. It keeps everything in place (no more smudging, hooray) until late afternoon. Perfect!

Odacite BI+C Pimples Serum: I don’t know about you but I sometimes (still) get pimples. Urgh, what’s up with that? They’re the worst, which is why this serum is so fantastic. Mixing it in with your daily moisturizer will literally get rid of your pimples and help you achieve blemish-free skin. I started using it on Saturday and the two zits that popped up on the side of my face have completely disappeared.

Living Proof Satin Hair Serum:  Okay, this isn’t really a beauty buy but I did buy it at Sephora so it kinda counts, right? I have incredibly frizzy hair so I’ve been on the look out for something that would make it a little more manageable. Oftentimes, these serums make my hair oily or flat but this one is different. It smooths my hair while keeping it grease-free. What’s better is a tiny bit goes a long way. Just one or two pumps, rub your hands together and then use it wherever you need to. In my case, it’s mostly on the ends.

Oh, and as for the concealer I wanted to buy? I didn’t buy it. It turns out that it was sold out so I had to buy it online. It’s Bare Minerals Bareskin Complete Coverage Serum Concealer. I haven’t tried it yet but I’ve heard incredible things.

Apartment Therapy – Bedroom

If I had my way, my bedroom would be pink. Lots and lots of pink.  I kid you not, every time I go shopping I’m immediately drawn to anything in that color.  The fact that the Pantone color of the year is rose quartz makes me squeal for joy.  However, despite my love for it, it seems that others don’t quite agree and every time I brought up the idea of having an all pink bedroom, I was quickly vetoed left, right, and center, which brought me back to square one. I wanted a room that was not only feminine but also grown-up. It basically has to be a place that both myself and my boyfriend can live in without him running back to his man-cave.

And so, with that in mind, here are some of my style inspirations for my not-so pink bedroom.

Netflix and…

… more Netflix.

What did you this I was going to write? Well, get your mind out of the gutter, this is a family friendly site :p

In case you were unaware, LA just survived several days of rain. Like, full on proper rainstorms. Now, before you roll your eyes and think, ‘Alex, you’re being a little dramatic. Who cares if it rained in LA?’  The answer is EVERYONE. Everyone cares. This is HUGE news. IT. ACTUALLY. RAINED. IN. LA.

Now I know I should be happy because, let’s face it, we need rain, lots and lots of rain, but honestly, after being in Miami last week where it was 85 degrees all day err day, it was pretty depressing returning to this miserable weather, especially now that I’m feeling a little under the weather. Before you worry, don’t, as I’m sure I’ll be better than new after I spending the entire Sunday curled up on the couch with some hot tea and Netflix. As miserable as being sick feels, it’s the perfect excuse to hibernate and catch up on all the things you haven’t had a chance to before.

What are your favorite things to do/ watch/ read while feeling sick?

Here are my current favorites:

Drunk History: For those of you who haven’t seen this Comedy Central gem yet, watch it. It’s hilarious. It’s basically drunk comedians retelling iconic stories about American history. Truly one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time.  If you want to binge-watch it (like I did over the holidays), you can check it out on Hulu. They currently have every episode out. FYI – My personal favorite is ‘First Ladies’.

Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes: I’m a huge Shonda Rhimes fan. She basically does what I want to do…. rule TV. Pretty impressive, right? In case you don’t know who she is, she is the writer and creator of some of my favorite shows: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and, most recently, How to Get Away With Murder. See, I wasn’t kidding when I said she was impressive. But somehow in the midst of ruling Thursday nights, she also had time to write a memoir, Year of Yes, which is truly one of the best books around right now. It’s an easy read and you’ll feel empowered after whizzing through it. Definite must-read.

Watch Me by Angelica Huston: In case you couldn’t tell, there’s a bit of a theme in my book list right now… I’m a huge film/TV buff. Who am I kidding? It’s not just subjected to my reading list, it’s my whole life. So what I’m saying is that it’s a good thing I happen to work in entertainment, but, anyway, I’m getting sidetracked. Back to the book. It’s a brilliant and candid chronicle of Angelica Huston’s glamorous life in Hollywood. Let’s face it, don’t we all want to know what it was like to be Jack Nicholson’s girlfriend and, not only that, but also become an Oscar winner in her own right? I think the answer is yes.

Jane the Virgin: One of the sweetest and funniest shows on air right now. It’s about Jane (obviously) who is a hardworking, ambitious young woman.. who also happens to be a virgin… and who also falls pregnant after she is accidentally artificially inseminated. Whoa! You can’t get more intense than that, right? Wrong. Throw in a drug lord, crazy family members and a love triangle and you’ve got yourself a hit show. I recently caught up with it on Netflix, which means I can now watch it in real time on the CW.

Oprah’s Next Chapter: My OWN personal guilty pleasure. I don’t think you fully understand how obsessed I am with this show. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen every episode at least three times but I don’t care, if it’s on OWN, I’m sitting down, giving up my life for the next 10 hours, and watching it.

Travel Destinations for 2016 – USA Edition

I’m a HUGE traveler. Nothing makes me happier than when I get to explore a new place or culture. I’m always up for a new adventure. While there are many countries I want to visit (trust me, the list gets longer every day), it can be a little tricky to jet off just for a weekend.  Because of this, I’ve been making a list of places to explore in the good ol’ U.S. of A, which can easily be done over a long weekend in 2016.

If you have any other suggestions, let me know. What’s on your bucket list for the upcoming year?

  • Road Trip to Big Sur, California – I mean, who doesn’t want to take road trip up the PCH?  Definitely one of the most photogenic places on the west coast.
  • New Orleans, Louisiana – for the past few years New Orleans has been on my to-do list and yet, for some reason, it kept passing me by. But not this year. This year is the year it all changes. I’m determined.  While most people want to party during Mardi Gras, I’ve had it on good authority (from several locals) that the Jazz Festival is just as good… If not better. There’s still a vibrant party scene without all the mess and hassle. Definitely more up my alley. Also, I can never say no to a good beignet.
  • Taos, New Mexico – I’m a total history nerd so this is right up my alley. It has such a rich cultural history ranging from the Pueblo people up to the 20th century when several artists and literary geniuses, like D.H Lawrence, lived there.
  • Charleston, South Carolina – what can I say, I love how charming and quaint it is.  From the photos, I can understand why one of my close friends, who grew up there, has been trying to get me to visit. There’s so much to do and see here whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or a major shopaholic.  Thankfully I’m all three of those things.

    Apartment therapy – Living Room

Exciting news… after 18 months of searching and then an additional 7 months of renovating, I’m (almost) ready to move into my home. The past few months have been incredibly stressful. It’s been a lot of heartache and tears but I can’t wait to see it when it’s finally completed. For someone who had little interest in building LEGOs, I’m feeling quite proud of working this while balancing a full time job.

Over the next few weeks, I thought I’d show some of my inspiration for the design. This week is all about the living room. While my boyfriend’s main priority was the sound system, I was focused on opening up the space.  The goal is for it to feel contemporary yet elegant. Definitely not an easy feat.

    Year of Four

Umm… how have I not seen this video until now?  I’m normally on top  of all things pop culture-y (US Weekly, eat your heart out) but apparently I completely missed Beyonce’s ‘Year of Four’… and not for like, a couple of months, it’s been four years! FOUR YEARS!  What’s up with that?

Anyway, I’m sure most of you have seen this video, but for those who haven’t, watch it and for those who watched it ages ago, watch it again. It’s only 20, but I promise it’s incredible.

What I love about it is that her drive and passion shines through. She makes no apologies for being a complete bada** who is always willing to push herself, no matter how scared she is.  Her ambition and work ethic are truly awe-inspiring and, as a young woman in a creative industry, it’s a great reminder that we should always keep pushing ourselves.

“I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. I only have to follow my heart and concentrate on what I want to say to the world. I run the world.” – Beyonce, Year of Four

    Happy New Year

Hi guys! It’s nice to meet you, I’m Alex. As it’s the start of the new year, I thought I’d be a total cliche and tackle a brand new project… a blog. Yes, I know it’s a little self-indulgent but what I really hope is that it will be a fun way of connecting with friends and family all over the world as well as exploring things that interest and inspire me, like fashion, entertainment and travel…. and I hope you find it interesting too.

Early warning: I’m not the most computer savvy, unless we’re talking about online shopping (and in that case, I’m kind of a whiz) so please bear with me as I work out all the early kinks in running a blog.

    Hope you enjoy! xx
